Where is my mind...

I thought about a beautiful and empowering post this morning as I was driving for a lunch-date.
Then my GPS decided to stop working and with it went out all the ideas.
So I find myself speechless...

So here are the ceilings that somehow had something to do with a great idea I had this morning...

Happy Tuesday!

Wonderland...

Many friends and loved ones are going through shifts and changes and I am as well. The beginning of any given year presents us with the opportunity of growth and rebirth and most of us embrace it. Questioning my own existence and future is as normal as brushing my teeth these days.

Like the frog footman shows up with an invite to the croquet game... the return of old lovers via Facebook friend request is one I always question. Puzzled, I accept. Something happens when we reach a certain age and with fondness we navigate the roads and rivers of the past as if we've dropped something along the way...

What I remember from those days is a plethora of boys I've kissed. Beautiful boys that provided me with even more beautiful adventures, music, art and laughter. They never meant any harm and I would always leave them before they had a chance to leave me. Then, all I needed was someone warm to hold onto and read poetry with. Drink wine and kiss me until the sun would come up or until my lips were burning... chapped... from all the kissing. These boys all tasted like mangoes and papayas who was I to deny myself of such sweetness. They would lay on my lap and fall asleep.

Dreaming of who knows what...

Alice could possibly be one of my favorite characters and as an homage of me going down the rabbit hole and with the help of Krista that wanted so badly to be Alice...
I present to you...

About Bribes...

bribe
brīb/Submit
verb
1.
persuade (someone) to act in one's favor, typically illegally or dishonestly, by a gift of money or other inducement.
"an undercover agent bribed the judge into giving a lenient sentence"
synonyms: buy off, pay off, suborn;

I completely understand that bribing is a terrible thing and we should never ever partake in such behavior.  I also understand that after three children I should be a Pro at this thing called motherhood. I know there are better, mature and responsible ways to go around it but bribing her seemed the most logical. I had depleted the whole bags of tricks and I was left defenseless.

All she wanted was to go meet an alligator princess and all I wanted was to no longer share part of the paycheck with Huggies. In complete agreement and accordance we entered a contract my terribly smart and savvy three year old and I. Since alligators as we all know  hate diapers and Pull Ups we trained for the occasion.  We trained because we knew showing up in a diaper could cause alligators to get extremely angry and not be the most gracious of hosts...

We trained...

Until today when we victorious celebrated with the royal family of alligators that reside in the Tybee Island kingdom. No longer a baby and now moving into the world of toddlers we celebrated with every alligator in the realm. They welcome her even curtsying as she moved through.

Happy and accomplished she curtsy right back.

It is all well on this side of the kingdom.
It is all well and we are celebrating and rejoicing.

And just like that...
They all lived happily ever after...

Summer Goodness...

.

So I will now say goodbye to my favorite month of the year with the best Margarita recipe and a few other favorites of the Summer.

Via

A simple margarita deserves simple paper decorations and lots of twinkling lights... I will keep the tradition alive throughout the winter months.

Via

I will also keep the mountains as a tradition and getaway in the summertime...

And just like that it will be all about pumpkins, pies and cinnamon brooms.
Enjoy the long weekend and please... Stay Sweet.

Highlands...

Adriana from Savannah went on a mountain
She packed a few strawberries and bananas
She hiked a few hills softly and quite still
Once upon a mountain she came upon a time.

She felt young and too easy
She was singing songs from the Appalachia
They were not from Zambia
Some were sad and hollow
As they all produced sorrows

At night she could hear the ants breathing and the spiders weaving
The dead of night would let you hear the roots digging
The moon broke the clouds with no effort not even an echo

She drank from the springs and placed river stones on her tongue
All in hopes of learning a new language
It proved to be quite a challenge
For all her friends were gone.

Monday Poem...

I stood there underneath the magnolia tree and there was no one to watch me glistening under the moonlit southern sky. I stood underneath that moon for awhile bathing in her silvery milky white light. As in draped in diamonds my cinnamon skin sparkles. I stand on my own spinning cycle while the earth moves underneath my feet slowly just as slowly as the water evaporates from my skin. This would have only been another Sunday if I had not chosen to write about it. There was not a single witness in sight. I could only hear the cicadas singing their summer anthem and every now and then the silhouette of a black cat. Today would have been lost in the dark waters of my mind. But my fingers do this waltz on the letter keys in hopes by morning light my eyes will see clearly.

Blackie...

Something you need to know about me. I cuss like a sailor even though I don't on my blog. This post has a few obscene words . This post is my story.  My first attempt to deal with some wounds. This is a true story... If you have never read the blog please read the About Page and the following post.  To my regular readers, friends and family... I did ask permission to write this. She (Mom) gave me artistic freedom to write regardless of how painful it could be to read.  I thank my lucky stars and I admire and love her for allowing me to move forward regardless of ego or emotions. This is not an apology for my words or the story about to be told but a bit of background information.

Unapologetically Yours, Blackie.

I want to talk about her.
"Oh... her" my mother said as if  I was talking about somebody deceased.
We all change over time.  Evolve. Grow up.
But to have a persona of yourself die.
To know that if I was face to face with that girl would she even acknowledge me as her future.

It was the last day of school before the Christmas break. Friday. December the 18th 1987. Plans had been made for everyone to meet at the rainforest after school to celebrate. These plans had not been shared with my parents.  A "no" was not going to stop me that night. All I could do was ask for forgiveness since I wasn't asking for permission. I needed nothing from them but time.

My father, a converted Jehovah Witness and closeted alcoholic, would never allow me to go anywhere. He was a singer songwriter during the late nineteen fifty's in Miami Beach right after the Cuban revolution and he reassured me he had seen it all. Since he had seen it all, there was no need for me or anyone to travel and see anything other than our familiar surroundings. My father wasn't protective. He was a tyrant, a dictator, a sadomasochist and alcohol enhanced it. Nine months prior to this day he had dragged me by my hair down the street. By down, the street I mean two blocks down the street.  And by dragging me by my hair, I literally mean dragging me by my hair. My feet had no choice but to keep up with the fast pace of my father's footsteps. That was just the prelude, the Intro, as his musician self would have referred to it. I had no doubt what my father would do to me "the night of the rainforest" as I now refer to it.

Money came via a visit to the pawn shop. A gold necklace. Figaro. The pawnbroker must have been pretty happy with his thirty dollar score. To me it was my ticket to freedom.

Thirty bucks in 1987 could buy you:

1 Megadeth T Shirt
A Half pack of Marlboro Red
1 Bottle of Lambrusco
1 joint (pre-rolled)
2 bus rides
1 Slice of Chorizo Pizza
1 gulpie size Coca Cola
A few dollars to contribute for gasoline.

In attendance was my much older boyfriend. I had just turned fifteen a few months prior. He had been eighteen for awhile. He was also the driver of a brand new MR2 which made him look cool.  His hair stretched down to his waist and he wore a leather jacket that matched the attitude. He was a bad boy and I knew it. He was bad and I wasn't. I, the girl that had never gone out on a date, the classically trained ballet dancer wanted  her freedom.

The rain forest was everything after closing hours. It provides you with everything to make fairy tales come alive. From mythical creatures with wings and red eyes to goat blood sucking monsters and the many waterfalls and tropical birds. El Yunque is one of the oldest in the western hemisphere and the only tropical rainforest in the USFSS (United States Forest Service System) Home to seventy kinds of birds, eleven kinds of bats, eight kinds of lizards and thirteen kinds of  Coqui, to over two-hundred and twenty five species of trees and plants, twenty six of which are found nowhere else. The rainforest like  a great a recipe has all the ingredients to make something really mystical.

We climbed the watchtower after hours through the lower level windows. Once we were up in our tower we could see the mountains and the whole island among the clouds. Three thousand and three hundred feet over sea level. By my side stood the god of rock and cock. An untamed force as wild as a hurricane and just as destructive. Who could stop us. We were gods for a moment. Drunk on wine and high on cannabis we felt like gods. I looked out over the forest as if it was my kingdom. The trees bowed gently towards me paying their homage. The Ceiba trees said you are queen. I was their protector and my forest would survive the industrial machine driven by American interest.

We danced while we stood high on the turret.  Jokes were exchanged as well as anarchists and socialist political arguments were thrown to the mix. I felt smart and strong until it was our time to go back. As I was walking down the spiral staircase of my turret my mortality became apparent. There were ninety-eight steps to reach the bottom. Every step brought us closer to the beginning of our end.

As the last to leave we fell prey to the forest spirits.  The mud was so thick and unyielding it held to the tires of the MR2 like it had been left there for years. And maybe it was. It rains every fifteen minutes at the top of the mountain or about two-hundred and forty inches of rain a year. Time held no sway to us on that night. The forest would not let me go. In a desperate attempt I sacrificed my Megadeth tee shirt in hopes it would be enough to get the tire out. As anyone knows from back-country living the only way to get a vehicle out of the mud is to put something under the tires to give them traction.

A stop sign would be what did the trick only after taking a gash out of his head as he yanked it off the pole. My god of rock turned into the lord of murder with blood dripping from his head and covering his whole face like new skin.

We were freed. But I was about to be taken hostage by something far worse than unyielding mud. My father, god of rum and not giving a shit for what you have to say, was about to show me his wrath.

Like a knight, I was ready for the battle. As I arrived home every single one of the lights were turned on.  It was lit up like a boxing rink.  My father beat me like a man. Like a man, I stood up to fight him after I had been knocked down. Like a man, I squared off to him and said I am no longer afraid of you. Like a man, he told me to get out of my house.

Before you ask... And as if cued and told to exit stage left my mother was not around or at least I can't remember her being in that one room. I do remember her helping me pack my bags while she shook her head in a disapproving way at me. I was late. I had broken curfew. I was defiant. I deserved it. Her eyes reminded me of the women I had seen in photographs walking in a straight line in Auschwitz. Empty. Defeated.

But now the blood was on his hands. This is the little monster he would create. Adriana had walked out the doors and in her place stepped a different woman one that could handle the streets of Carolina. A girl that was ruthless. Calculating. Smart enough to lead. A five foot four menace to society. Her street-name was Blackie and this is the beginning of her tale.

I've told my husband stories about her and about her existence. Amusing anecdotes to pass the time. It never became real to him until he met some of my comrades from the past. I love the word comrades over friends. Friends are the ones that you tell jokes with and send flowers if they are sick. A comrade will step in front of a bullet for you with no thought to their own lives because they would be dying for something bigger than themselves. We were rebels and we thought we had a cause. We were rebels about to cause a revolution.

"Oh, you had to schedule an appointment to see her."
" You could assume she was always watching it all."
"If  Blackie gave an order we did it."
"No one got too close to her."
"How the hell did we ever survive that."

These were some of the things that my husband would hear until one night he turned to me and said point blank... "Who the fuck were you?"

It is a fair question but one which might need more time to be answered.
To be continued...

The South...

The days are flying by and summer is upon us in Savannah, GA. The days are longer and with all the sunlight more opportunities to photograph my surroundings. On a daily basis I fall in love with photography. Every time I get that one image that feels as if I took the brush to a canvas. Capturing that fleeting moment gives me such satisfaction. A moment that otherwise would be lost in time. Because I am addicted to my surroundings and all of the beauty that I see.

*Savannah Sidewalk Art festival is one of my favorite art festivals. Artists creates exquisite pieces of art which today are gone. Chalk art taken to another level.  Like Buddhists monks they create these beautiful pieces that are just for a moment in time.

Colors so bright and intense and this is the moment that I realize I am way too fast and impatient to be a painter. It is now that I want to capture all of it. I want it to be with ease and fluidity and  my hands could never move fast enough.

 photo sidewalkartfestival_zps03c66e07.jpg

Just as my brain begins to wrap itself around all the colors and surroundings just as I am beginning to feel the breeze, the sun and all of this art... history shows up and slaps me on the face. A war that saw the end of slavery and the downfall of a southern planter aristocracy.

There wasn't a family in the South that did not lose a son or brother or father.

It was the birth of a new freedom...
The most necessary, horrible and heroic conflict this nation has ever witnessed.

I felt as if I was falling down the rabbit hole with so much pain and sadness yet glad to be here in the year 2013. I return to meet with my tribe and there she was smiling so big. Right there in the middle of the Historic District in Downtown Savannah...

February 13th...

There are flowers on my bedsheets and polka dots on my silky gown.
There is cigarette smoke dancing with the nag champa frolicking in the pink morning light.
There are many bubbles on our equally pink drink and we look at each other and we smile.

We smile because we are not supposed to be having this much fun after 14 years.
We smile because we are not supposed to lust after each other as much.
We smile because we are not supposed to be celebrating Valentines day... today is the 13th.

There are berries and a lace window curtain dancing in the air.
There is a girl thinking of writing poetry so she scribbles words on her thigh.
There are neighbors walking their dogs unaware of what had just happened and we smile.

 Happy Valentines Day!

Blonde Ambition...

For some reason the age becomes cloudy almost ghost like in my head and for some reason I don't remember my kid brother being there, being part of my story , but better yet I can't remember my older brother either. Which means this is MY story.

I must have been seven or maybe eight but I could definitely have been only five since I was always told I was precocious. I was told I was the type of girl that could understand lots without much explanation.

It could have been because my mother by profession a beautician she had her salon in the back of our house and one of the windows of my bedroom would coincidentally be a part of such salon. I knew a lot about men and the neighborhood and the ladies that would clutch hard unto their pearls. That window taught me more than all my years in college would ever teach me.

Early on I learned that although women are often described as fickle more fickle were the men and the opposite gender would always be a mystery. I also learned that promises were really hard to keep. I learned about good hair and the extremes that some women would go through to be who they think they should be.

Growing up in the 70's my mother had dark red hair enviable by the most expensive of Bordeaux. Deep and lovely was that color to the point I thought my mother was a natural born red head. I remember her one afternoon wearing an Indian caftan in peacock blue that had silver threads running through and the sun was setting in our Caribbean island and her hair appeared to have been on fire. She looked at me that afternoon as she raised one of her perfectly penciled eyebrow and said to me " Love I will be right back."

Photobucket
One of the few color photos of the red hair I have... top right that would be me as a baby.

I saw her flowing gown disappeared to the back of the house as she walked into her beauty salon and the door closed shut.

Two hours later she reappeared and she was now a blonde.

The shock what happened? Who was she?

Two days later I was told to wear my yellow dress the one that I would wear when we had somewhere important to be. I dab some perfume as she was teasing her now blonde mane. She chose a bright red lipstick and a black blouse with gold accessories. We drove for what seemed like a few minutes and we arrived to a large building close to the beach that housed many of the yuppies on the island. Near a beach and equipped with gyms and large mirrors. A gated community of apartment buildings for the creme de la creme.

She stood stoically on the balcony of the apartment smoking her Benson and Hedges and drinking her Licor 43 with milk and cinnamon. She shoos me away and I begin to run up and down the halls of the fancy building. During one of my runs I spot a blonde dress in black with gold accessories her nails showed me quickly it was not my mother as she waved her cigarette in the air and laughed the loudest.

My mother had the hands of a woman that scrubbed and washed for a living.

Suddenly I see those perfectly manicured hands caress the face of my father as she exhales her cigarette smoke she leans in and kisses my father. It is then the moment I realized why my beautiful mother is now a blonde.

I ran back to her and she was standing still with cocktail in hand. I ran back to profess my love for her. It is then when I decided I would never be a blonde.

Inside and Out...

The leaves continue to fall around here and I walk outside and I hear the crunchy sounds with each one of my steps. For a moment I close my eyes and I go back to Germany winter of 1993. I was walking on the snow with my baby strapped to my back during a very cold winter and that walk changed my life.

I miss my boy. It's our first Christmas apart and I wish there were more ways to tell him how much I love and care for him. How proud I am of who he is. For his strength, independence, resilience and hard working spirit. Because my love you are fearless the truest of warriors. You have used your adversities to mold you into a man. I think we did pretty good... It's an honor being your mother.

Photobucket

In the meantime the busy time and moments have passed. What was needed has been bought. New and old friends have gathered and celebrated the season. Late night by candlelight and with plenty of wine. Happy and sad stories danced around the room to the beat of the music and I love each moment because they filled my soul with inspiration and ideas and my mind takes off faster than my feet.

 Photobucket

This signals the moment and time to retreat.

With the falling leaves comes a calmness and stillness. It's time for me to find the ground as well. Missing myself is a great sign of creativity and ideas that are beginning to sprout. It's time to grow the roots that will help me stand strong in the upcoming year. The candles continue to shine my path as I turn inwards to bid farewell to 2012. The year some thought to be the last but I know is just the beginning.

There is a white dog and a black cat with long whiskers, two girls that bounce around full of chocolate fondue and flying high with dreams of sugar plum fairies. The fireplace burns bright and a cup of coffee flavored with Cinnamon and nutmeg awaits me.

I hope wherever you find yourself this season peace reigns in your home. Merry Christmas my friends. Santa is watching so please stay sweet.

Waltz With The Wind...

Lately I have had that feeling of being stuck inside a pressure cooker. I can hear the whistling sound reaching that point where I feel like screaming. So this morning I left to work and work took me to a garden and I thought I am early I will meditate. I will close my eyes and ask for some internal peace and resolution to situations that are inhabiting this head of mine but quickly all the noise and chatter took over frustrating me much more. My eyes quickly filled with tears adding to the frustration and feeling  of hopelessness. I took a deep breath and with cloudy eyes I saw this...

Photobucket

And since I look for signs everywhere to guide me I took it in. It was a sermon delivered. My sermon. And like a prophecy the trees played the waltz of the wind. It was right there I knew what needed to be done. It was right there I understood.

 Photobucket

So I went about with my day coming home to a girl that was calling her mama on her princess phone.

 Photobucket

All I could do after I saw her was ask her to dance. So there in a backyard in the southeast coast stood one little girl and (an almost well done in a pressure cooker) Mama and they danced a waltz with the wind.

Woman on the verge...

I did not know where to begin after almost a week of silence. I did not know how to jump back in. We are so hard with ourselves always striving to achieve more and sometimes I lose sight of what brought  me here in the first place. This was my place to be loud. My cyber space where I could run around naked without judgement. I wanted to be able scream out loud freely like a mad woman.

Isn't that what we are all called? A mad woman. I can recall from childhood that a mad woman is a woman with too many views and strong opinions.  In history I learned all about Vivienne Haigh Wood Eliot, Zelda Fitzgerald, Sylvia Plath, Frida Kahlo. Geniuses called mad. In her bestselling book Women and Madness, Phyllis Chesler argued that women’s anger, or rebellion, was frequently misdiagnosed as sickness.

So we are constantly doing that whole balancing act trying to be better. Assuming we are acrobats, jugglers, clowns the whole circus. Because we have to serve the hot meal, teach the ABC's, keep a clean house and do it all while wearing lipstick. Because no one ever asks any dude hey how do you do it all... Do you have it all.

No wonder we read blog after blog of woman crying and screaming out loud. Talking about everyone including their Mamas. Sometimes my mind begins to sew them, all of them, together and they form a rare and complex patchwork of ideas. So beautiful. So delicate. So strong.

And this is how I have decided to jump back in from my break of writing with my own redemption post. With my own proclamation that I too am a mad woman.

 Around Savannah...

Savannah hosts Picnic in the Park every year. Every year is themed including the picnic and the performances. This year was some enchanted evening. Over 23,000 picnickers come out feast and share in community. That is how I ended my weekend and a few shots I wanted to share...
