Brought to you by the letter A...

Savannah has been bathed in sunlight for the past few days.. Don't hate us but we've  had three days of temperatures in the low 80's with a yummy breeze and pink sunsets. Open windows at night feels like a premature summer and I really dig...This morning it finally rained because in reality that is too much and completely unfair to my northern friends.

Wednesday, I set off to create Africa in Savannah. Inspired and trying to subside this wanderlust feeling within I did a session with Shaunii R. I try really hard to create worlds and spaces within a frame. I work hard to not repeat myself with concepts and ideas.  I work hard so each shoot is different and unique. In the end not only I am happy for the challenge but the subject feels proud and happy to have been a part in the creation of it.

I must tell you after my shoot my car battery died...
I must tell you two Southern (one can be seen in one of the images) gentlemen helped me get back on the road...
I must tell you that the one driving the pick up truck  (no picture of him available) was so dreamy...
I really must tell you that Shaunii and I felt as if we were a part of an 80's John Hughes movie montage.

Country Days…

While I lived in Germany desperate for a job I found work at the Army base at the NCO club. I had two duties, one as a bartender on Fridays, Saturdays and Wednesdays and a DJ on Tuesdays and Thursdays Nights. I loved my nights as a DJ and I lived for them. I would get lost in the music. I was thousands of miles away from the island where I grew up but music always brought me back home. Music always provided the comfort of sweet and sad memories and I feeling nostalgic would traveled in a trance. I am one of those that wish that could walk and a soundtrack would start playing along. I am one of those that would love life as a musical. I love reading and writing with a lyrical tone hoping you are singing the words along with me.

In Germany was the place where I discovered Country Music, Bluegrass and Folk. Loretta Lynn, Lou Reed, George Strait and Dolly Parton. Garth Brooks, Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash. Willie Nelson and so many more that I can’t remember and it's no joke after I mention Nelson. I would play Country Music to the men and women serving overseas and I would watch them as they would sing along with pride and enthusiasm. The whiskey shots would flow and the beer mugs would be raised and we would all admit to having friends in low places.

Savannah, GA is where I understood the meaning of Country Music, Bluegrass and Folk. The mountains of Georgia have inculcated a love for the Appalachians, banjo music and the sounds of a good washboard. Drinking out of mason jars and the art of wasting time watching a sunset  has made this Latina a good ole’ Southern girl. Merging my island country ways with that of the Georgia southern living have allowed this headstrong person with much needed healing to return to very simple ways. To live with things that I need not with what I want. The South has transformed me and I forever will be grateful to the South.

To follow images from The Revival Fest in Savannah, GA that was held this past weekend. A modern Low Country Hoe Down…

Friday Freebie...

Not one thing I have tried to do this week has gone the way it should have for a second I felt as if I was reading someone else's daily planner. Work that did not pay off. Appointments where no one but me showed. Calls that were never answered. I was searching for a sanctuary and I found a virtual one.

Completely free... My web find Calm
My Friday Freebie's are non sponsored cool stuff I find and wish to share with you.

You can choose between nature sounds and music and or both. Change the scenery I was in a meadow because that is where I wanted to be. Guided timed meditations. Or just a timer to close your eyes and zen out. They also have an app.

So there you have it go give it a go and relax... It's Friday.
Happy Weekend...Stay Sweet.

Shangri La

Shan·gri-la  (shnggr-lä)
n.
1. An imaginary remote paradise on earth; utopia.
2. A distant and secluded hideaway, usually of great beauty and peacefulness.

Monday is my Sunday for most. So I share with you my Shangri La...

If you can grow Ginger Lily in your area I highly suggest you do. The perfume is intoxicating.

I did a photo shoot with a girl named Janie she is sweet and beautiful and here are my favorite images...

That is my weekend in a nutshell.  I am looking forward to the weekend coming up and the opportunity to photograph The Revival Fest in Savannah. Revival Fest is a modern low-country hoe-down.  It’s a celebration of music and community; of cool goods and products produced in our area; along with great music representing the best of our Southern region and beyond on two stages in a truly historic setting. Southern rock, Americana, Folk, Gospel and my favorite Bluegrass. Can't wait to share those images with you.

Until then...Happy Monday and please stay sweet.

Graduation Day...

* I struggled with the idea of posting this. As usual I second guess myself wondering if I am sharing too much and leaving myself naked. Thanks Ezzy for saying the following... You have your followers because of your authenticity and talent. Don't compromise.

I drive weekly to this small and hidden waterhole near my house. All summer Baby M has reluctantly gone to the beach not taken any steps into the water she sits by the shore and plays in the sand. She has been cautious even by the pool area. She is cautious in just about everything. I have settled and grown comfortable to watch her play in the sand for hours. Something about a kid being safe gives you such peace like when they are newborns and you know they are not going to go anywhere and peacefully they just sleep like angels. All that changes when a child gathers independence, a will and strength. All that changes when a child begins the process of decision making.

I am sure she has an internal clock that is marking the summer's end. I am sure she can tell the sun is beginning to set a bit earlier and that the sun rays are leaning in a different direction. Punxsutawney Phil did not have any lessons but yet we have paid attention to the predictions since 1887. I am certain at the age of three she knew. Summer is almost over...

I did not bring her bathing suit it was not the plan to swim but she is the perfect country girl and she adapted and did not resist the powers of a salt water marsh lined with sea grass.  Her older sister took cue and follow suit. Because that is what older sisters do...

My Graduation...
Truth is I have had 3 emotional breakdowns since Monday including one late Sunday night as I was watching The Life of Pi.

Like Richard Parker my son has left the house. Not that I am not thrilled with his departure at the age of 21. What broke me in half was the way he so unceremoniously left me. Not even a head turn to wish me farewell...

He was the only child I planned. He was planned since I had been married for two years and my then husband a military man, a young military man, was embarking on a tour to Desert Storm going off to war and I could not bear that I, his wife, had not given him a  child regardless if I was only 18. Like the most enthusiastic martyr I forsake any plans for a career or financial stability in the future. I forsaken my independence and the possibility of a nest egg in the name of love.

It was tough for my Richard Parker and I. I was so young and completely stupid and when he was three years of age I became a single mother. I can do this. I am strong enough. I have survived before.

Bounce or Fly? Crawl.

My marriage was not a walk in the park and neither was the second husband I also left behind in that god forsaken town.  A church every ten steps from your front door. An incomplete college education, a middle school level in the English language and a knack for photography was not going to cut it in the tiny southern town of Hinesville, GA. Back then there were three stop lights, one titty bar and one Wal-Mart that was all that brought life to the town. My kid and I were living in our private version of southern town hell. One tiny brown kid. One angry brown girl. One Southern town. Two husbands later I crawled and made my way to Savannah, GA.

With my knees skinned and bloody I had already caused enough damage. I had bounced from one end of the world to another. By the time I found an anchor and by the time my roots grew... His trunk was leaning the other way. Looking for a different source of sunlight. It breaks my heart to even think that I might be the reason why the kid is so quick to leave me without a proper goodbye. It breaks my heart to know he is not attached to me and that was a lesson I wrote for him early on. I also have the feeling that his inability to be attached to me might be a part of his DNA... Inheritance from his Father. Otherwise I would have never had a need of crawling and no trunks would have been bend looking for sunlight. For whatever reason... He is now gone without a proper goodbye.

So I manically dance between being the parent of a toddler, a teen and a adult and graduate once again to another level into a more difficult road in motherhood. One I am trying to understand. To follow the words I am trying absorb...

On Children
by Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.
For they have their own thoughts.
You may house their bodies but not their souls,
For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,
which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.
You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.
For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.
The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite,
and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.
Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;
For even as He loves the arrow that flies,
so He loves also the bow that is stable.

Summer Goodness...

.

So I will now say goodbye to my favorite month of the year with the best Margarita recipe and a few other favorites of the Summer.

Via

A simple margarita deserves simple paper decorations and lots of twinkling lights... I will keep the tradition alive throughout the winter months.

Via

I will also keep the mountains as a tradition and getaway in the summertime...

And just like that it will be all about pumpkins, pies and cinnamon brooms.
Enjoy the long weekend and please... Stay Sweet.
