Stargazing...

I was watching Brian Williams Rock Center the other night as I was slipping in and out of dreamland. I heard them talk about some antennas being placed at 16,500 feet in northern Chile in a dessert which once was a sea and now an amazing beautiful plateau. I heard them talk about Carl Sagan's Cosmos series on PBS and I remember watching with my father as a child. One night he shared with me the most poetic thing about physics which is we are all made of stars. I think anyone that watched this show shares this experience.

Each one of us is made up of particles of stardust hundreds of billions of stars that died providing us with our makeup. The earth and all of its living things are made of stars. Stars process and make carbon oxygen, nitrogen that is in the air, the iron in your blood. We are made of star stuff. Every single atom in our body has gone through the life cycles of many generations of stars. While watching these series I felt my head would explode how can a child grasp it?

The summer heat keeps us up late at night and looking up at the skies and we quote Twain for good measure as we sip on the iced tea... “We had the sky up there, all speckled with stars, and we used to lay on our backs and look up at them, and discuss about whether they was made or only just happened.” Huck Finn

As the night kisses the dawn goodnight I drift into slumber.
